Healthy chicken Gyros

Posted by

Gyros is the first thing that comes to mind when I mention Greek sandwich. Making it healthy, with my choice of ingredients and bread was the fun part. Chicken gyros with Arabic bread and tzatziki sauce is a delight. Perfect for lunchboxes and is filling enough for a meal.

I am a fan of travel based food shows. With my newborn when I was homebound, I watched two to three such shows in a row. Felt like a globetrotter with no guilt of a couch potato. I am so glad for such shows which besides being informative teaches you how food connects people.

In one of the shows, I got introduced to Gyros. It looked delicious. And being a fan of meat wrapped in a bread, I got instantly drawn to it. A couple of years back I came across a truck that sold Gyros along with a few other Greek-style street foods in a local food truck festival. I must say these guys knew their food well. Wish I could recall the name of the truck.

Well, regular Gyros would have meat, fries, tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, onion and often fries. The meat is cooked in a vertical rotisserie. The bread is usually pita but I choose to use local Arabic bread kuboos.

The tzatziki sauce is such a delight and easy to prepare. Instead of hung curd, I used part labneh in the recipe. Sprouts and olives are another addition I couldn’t do without. Do tell me about any wrap/sandwich you tried in a new place and loved it. The soft kuboos bread is also a great base for the sandwich.

Recipe of Tzatziki sauce and gyros(Greek sandwich)

Preparation time: 20 min
Serves: 2-4
Cooking time: 20 min

Cucumber 1 medium
Curd Tbsp
Labneh 3 tbsp
Dill 1 tbsp chopped
Salt and pepper

Chicken breast 400 gms
Paprika 1 tsp
Cumin powder ½ tsp
Coriander powder ½ tsp
Zest of one lemon
Olive oil
Garlic 2 pods (grated)
Salt and pepper
Cherry tomatoes 1 cup
Onion 1
Lettuce 5-6 leaves
Olives ½ cup
Cucumber 1

  1. Sauce
Grate the cucumber and squeeze out the water. Add the rest of the ingredients and whip together. You get a creamy and delicious dip in no time.
  2. the chicken
Marinate the chicken breasts in all the spices, oil and zest of lemon, then set it aside for some time. Heat the oven and bake the chicken at 180 degrees for about 10 – 15 minutes. Flip it over when one side changes color. Bake for another 15 to 20 minutes. Take it out of the oven and cover the chicken.
  3. Assemble the sandwich
Slice the chicken, tomatoes, cucumber, and onion. Place the bread, in my case Arabic bread (kuboos) arrange the lettuce leaves, cucumber, tomatoes, olives, chicken and tzatziki sauce. Add onion slices, mint and sprouts. Wrap and we are good.
