Tips for the perfect looking dessert

Cooking for a small group or many people can be equally hectic and tiresome. And in case you run out of time for an elaborate dessert, whip up something simple but make it look amazing with these tried and tested tips.

How to style or garnish your dessert to make them look like a million bucks. Here are my top five tips.

  1. Keep a jar of whipping cream in the refrigerator. Whip it to stiff peaks and use a spoon to top your dessert. Minimum piping skills are enough to impress your guests. If you do not have piping bags, use a sandwich bag; the results will amaze you.

2. Colored jelly: yes, the ones you buy for your kids. Use the color to your advantage. The layer of jelly can be at the bottom or on top. They provide a perfect base and add contrast to your dessert.

3. Pureed fruit/curds: berries, mango, citrus fruits, etc., make perfect puree/curds. Use as filling or drizzle to create a light, airy feel.

4. Choose a complementary colour for garnishes that enhance the flavors and add visual appeal. Fresh fruits, mint leaves, edible flowers, or chocolate curls are popular options. I also love using citrus fruit peels (thinly sliced) to add some colour.

5. Sprinkle powdered ingredients like sugar, cocoa, powdered nuts (pistachios), matcha, dried berries powder, etc., lightly over the dessert for an elegant touch.

Simplicity is the key, so don’t overcrowd your dessert presentation. Focus on highlighting the dessert’s natural beauty and one or two of the above tips in combination to create a beautiful dessert.

Happy feasting!!

  1. These are great tips. My other go-to for desserts that we serve to dinner guests is keeping a edible glitter handy. I have a silver and a gold edible glitter and they add a little sparkle that is delightful.
