Magic Ingredient's avatarPosted by

In cafes from Tokyo to Toronto, matcha is having a major moment. This finely ground powder made from shade-grown green tea leaves has gone from a traditional Japanese tea ceremony staple to a global sensation. But what’s behind the craze?

For one, matcha isn’t just a trendy drink — it’s a wellness powerhouse. Rich in antioxidants, matcha is known for boosting metabolism, calming the mind, and offering a smoother caffeine experience than coffee. And let’s not forget the color — that vibrant green isn’t just pretty, it signals purity and freshness.

From lattes to pancakes to skincare, matcha is everywhere. And the latest internet favorite? Matcha Dalgona — a whipped, creamy twist on the viral coffee trend that’s as delicious as it is photogenic.

This matcha dalgona is rich, mellow, and incredibly satisfying. It’s like dessert in a cup, with a hit of zen. Whether you’re new to matcha or a long-time fan, this might be your new favorite way to enjoy it.

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Serves: 2-3

Ingredients:

  • Matcha powder (high-quality preferred) 1 tbsp
  • Sugar (granulated or powdered works) 2 tbsp sugar
  • Heavy whipping cream (cold) 1/2 cup
  • Cold milk (dairy or plant-based) 1 cup
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, add the whipping cream, matcha powder, and sugar.
  2. Use a hand whisk, electric mixer, or milk frother to whip the mixture until soft peaks form. This usually takes 2–4 minutes with an electric beater.
  3. Fill a glass with ice and pour in the cold milk, leaving a little space at the top. Spoon the whipped matcha cream over the milk.
  4. You can also enjoy it as a mousse-like dessert on its own. Sprinkle a little matcha powder on top for that café-style finish.
