Sesame and Jaggery Brittle (Chikki) with Dried Rose Petals – Bihu special

A harvest-time sweet that carries the warmth of home

Some sweets impress, and then some sweets belong. Sesame and jaggery brittle sits firmly in the second category. Two humble ingredients, cooked with care, forming a sweet that many of us grew up with—wrapped in newspaper, broken by hand, shared without ceremony.

Across India, this simple combination marks the harvest season. In Assam, Bihu fills homes with joy and gratitude. In the south, Pongal celebrates abundance. Makar Sankranti welcomes longer days, and Lohri gathers people around warmth, fire, and food. Different names, different rituals—yet the same comforting flavours.

This version keeps the soul intact, with a gentle styling touch: dried rose petals. They add a soft floral note and bring a festive elegance to an otherwise rustic sweet—perfect for gifting, festive tables, or thoughtful brand storytelling.
As kitchens across the country fill with familiar aromas and shared stories, we wish everyone warmth, abundance, and togetherness. Happy Bihu, Pongal, Makar Sankranti, and Lohri 🤍 May this harvest season bring sweetness in the simplest forms.

Preparation time: 15-16 minutes
Cooking time: 5-6 minutes
Serves: NA

Ingredients

  • White sesame seeds 220 g
  • Jaggery (preferably organic, grated or chopped) 150 g
  • Dried rose petals (edible) 1–2 tsp

Method

  1. Dry-roast the sesame seeds on low heat, stirring constantly until lightly golden and aromatic. Remove and keep aside.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed pan, melt the jaggery on low heat. Stir gently until fully melted and bubbling. Test readiness by dropping a little syrup into cold water—it should form a firm, brittle ball. Add the toasted sesame seeds to the jaggery syrup.
  3. Mix quickly and evenly. Transfer immediately onto a greased parchment or marble surface. Sprinkle dried rose petals over the top.
  4. Roll the dough out thin using a greased rolling pin. While still warm, cut into squares or shards. Let cool completely before breaking or lifting.
  5. As kitchens across the country fill with familiar aromas and shared stories, we wish everyone warmth, abundance, and togetherness.
