As the festive season slowly rolls in, I find myself thinking more and more about sweets that feel celebratory without hours in the kitchen. And this Coconut Cream & Pistachio Burfi came together exactly that way.

It actually started with a can of coconut cream I had sitting in the pantry. I wanted to turn it into something rich, quick, and festive, and burfi felt like the perfect idea. Coconut already has that beautiful natural sweetness and comforting texture, and paired with condensed milk, milk powder, and a little ghee, it becomes the softest, melt-in-the-mouth fudge.
I also added sesame seeds for a subtle nuttiness and gentle bite, while chopped pistachios bring colour, richness and that unmistakable festive feel. Once finished with crushed dried rose petals and vibrant green pistachios, this simple burfi suddenly looks incredibly elegant.
This recipe that proves festive sweets do not always have to be complicated. A handful of pantry ingredients, one pan, and a little patience are all you need.
Coconut Cream & Pistachio Burfi
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time :10-15 minutes
Serves: 4-5
Ingredients
- 1 can coconut cream, around 400 ml
- 1 cup desiccated coconut
- ยพ cup condensed milk, or adjust to taste
- ยฝ to ยพ cup milk powder
- 4 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp ghee, plus extra for greasing
- 6โ7 tbsp chopped pistachios
- 2 tbsp dried rose petals, lightly crushed
- A pinch of cardamom powder, optional
Method
- Lightly toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan for a minute or two until fragrant. Remove and set aside.
- In a heavy-bottomed or non-stick pan, add the coconut cream, condensed milk, and ghee. Cook over low to medium-low heat, stirring continuously until everything is smooth and well combined. Add the desiccated coconut, milk powder, and toasted sesame seeds.
- Continue cooking on low heat, stirring frequently so the mixture does not catch at the bottom. As the mixture cooks, it will gradually thicken and start to leave the sides of the pan.
- Add about 4โ5 tablespoons of the chopped pistachios, reserving the rest for the topping. Continue cooking until the mixture comes together into a soft mass and starts holding its shape.
- It should still look slightly moist, not dry. This is what gives the finished burfi its soft, melt-in-the-mouth texture.
- Grease a small square or rectangular tray with ghee and line it with baking paper if you prefer. Transfer the burfi mixture into the tray and spread it evenly using the back of a greased spoon or spatula.
- While still warm, scatter the remaining chopped pistachios and crushed dried rose petals on top.
- Gently press them into the surface. Allow the burfi to cool completely, then refrigerate for around 1โ2 hours until firm enough to slice.
- Cut into squares, rectangles, or diamonds and serve.

A Few Tips
Do not overcook the mixture. Once it begins pulling away from the sides of the pan and holds together, it is ready. Overcooking can make the burfi dry and crumbly.
The amount of milk powder can vary slightly depending on the thickness of your coconut cream. Start with ยฝ cup and add more gradually if the mixture feels too loose.
For an even more festive finish, you can add a little edible silver leaf just before serving.
Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, the burfi should keep well for around 4โ5 days.
Soft, coconutty and delicately nutty, with little pops of sesame and pistachio, this is such an easy sweet to add to your festive table. And with that combination of ivory coconut fudge, green pistachios, and scattered rose petals, it looks every bit as special as it tastes.
