Something about this time of year is a little confusingโbut also lovely.
We are technically entering a new season. My kids are already talking about Halloween, making plans, and getting excited about everything autumn brings. And yet, step outside, and the temperatures tell a completely different story. Summer clearly isn’t ready to leave us just yet.

The supermarket aisles feel much the same. Nectarines are still there, beautifully ripe and fragrant, and since my kids absolutely love them, they keep finding their way into our fruit bowl.
So when I felt like baking my first proper autumn-inspired loaf, I couldn’t quite commit to apples, pumpkin, and all those deeper fall flavours yet. Instead, I reached for the nectarines.
And somehow, this Walnut & Nectarine Cinnamon Loaf Cake feels exactly right for the moment we’re in.
It sits somewhere between two seasons.
The cinnamon and toasted walnuts bring that warm, nutty flavour I start craving as autumn approaches, while chunks of fresh nectarine keep the cake soft, juicy and bright. You get little pockets of almost jammy fruit running through the crumb, with the walnuts adding just enough texture.
It isn’t quite a summer cake. But it isn’t fully autumnal either.
And perhaps that’s exactly what an October bake in the UAE should taste like.

Walnut & Nectarine Cinnamon Loaf Cake
Ingredients
- 2 medium ripe but firm nectarines
- 220 g all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ยฝ tsp baking soda
- 1ยฝ tsp ground cinnamon
- ยผ tsp salt
- 100 g unsalted butter, softened
- 150 g sugar
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 100 g Greek yogurt or thick plain yogurt
- 60 ml milk, if needed
- 70 g walnuts, roughly chopped
- A few extra walnuts and thin nectarine slices for decorating
Method
- Preheat the oven to 175ยฐC. Grease and line a standard loaf tin with baking paper, leaving a little overhang to make lifting the cake out easier.
- Cut the nectarines into small cubes. For a more decorative loaf, reserve a few thin slices for arranging across the top.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar until pale and creamy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla. Fold in the yogurt.
- Add the dry ingredients and gently fold until just combined. If the mixture feels particularly thick, add one or two tablespoons of milk.
- You want a thick, spoonable batter rather than a runny one. Gently fold through the chopped walnuts and nectarine pieces, being careful not to overmix.
- Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf tin and smooth the surface. Arrange the reserved nectarine slices and a few walnut pieces over the top.
- Mix the tablespoon of brown sugar with the remaining cinnamon and scatter it over the loaf. This creates a lovely, lightly caramelised cinnamon crust as it bakes.
- Bake for approximately 50โ60 minutes, or until the loaf is golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs attached.
- Let it cool in the tin for about 15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.

A Cake for Somewhere Between Summer and Autumn
I love this loaf slightly warm, when the nectarines are soft and almost jammy, and you can really smell the cinnamon and toasted walnuts.
It’s beautiful on its own, but a little softly whipped cream, labneh, or mascarpone alongside would turn a simple slice into something much more indulgent.
Most of all, I love what this cake represents.
We don’t always have to rush into the next season just because the calendar tells us it has arrived. Sometimes we can hold on to the last little pieces of the one we’re leaving behind.
For now, I’ll happily keep my nectarinesโand add a little cinnamon to them.
