Mulled wine with jaggery

There are numerous recipes for mulled wine online, and all of them are delicious. This one has jaggery, making it a tad bit healthy compared to the others. I prepare mulled wine with leftover wine.

I look forward to enjoying a glass of mulled wine over the weekend watching the latest action flick. Winter calls for indulgences like these.

I prefer using Merlot for mulling. Warm spices like cinnamon, star anise, and cloves add to the taste.  I cannot imagine a mulled wine without an orange in it. The juice and zest of orange add a hint of sweetness and fruity flavor. The process needs time and care. Slow rolling simmer over a more extended period yields the best results.

One bottle of wine is enough for two as it makes around 4-5 glasses (medium-sized).

Which fruits and spices do you add to your pot of mulled wine?

Preparation Time : 5 minutes
Cooking Time : 20-25 minutes
Serves : 2-3

Ingredients

  • Wine 750 ml
  • Orange juice 200 ml
  • Oranges 2
  • Cinnamon sticks 2
  • Star Anise 3-4
  • Cloves 4-5
  • Jaggery powder 120 gms

Method

  1. Peel the oranges and cut them into slices. Reserve a few slices for garnish. Place all the ingredients in a deep bottom pan and bring it to a rolling boil. Then simmer it and let it reduce for 15-20 minutes. Add a little water/juice to adjust the consistency if it gets too thick. Pour into serving glasses and garnish with orange slices and cinnamon. Serve warm.
